Rahul Gandhi Draws Backlash From Sona Mohapatra for “Demeaning” Remark About Aishwarya Rai

During the Ram Temple’s inaugural event in Ayodhya last month, popular singer Sona Mohapatra made fun of Rahul Gandhi for his recent comments on Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Taking to X (previously known as Twitter), the singer sent a slew of tweets criticizing the treatment of women by politicians for political gain and supporting Aishwarya Rai in response to what she saw as insulting comments.

What was the issue?

Rahul recently poked fun at the governing BJP at a public rally called “The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, over the opening of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22, 2024. Notably absent from the lavish celebration, which was attended by Bollywood superstars and billionaires, the head of the Congress noted that the OBCs and Dalits, who comprise 73% of the nation’s population, were marginalized.

“Have you seen the Ram Temple’s ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony? Was there only one face from OBC? Rahul Gandhi has said, “There was Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, and Narendra Modi.

The BJP retaliated by posting a collage of Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on X, in which the 53-year-old is heard referencing the Bollywood star. Rahul Gandhi is heard stating, “TV channels only show Aishwarya Rai dancing,” during one of the addresses. Nothing about the impoverished is shown.

Sona Mohapatra, a musician, expressed her outrage at Rahul’s statement and asked the politician whether such comments were necessary in a society that is already sexist. “What’s with politicians demeaning women in their speeches to get some brownie points in a sexist landscape?” Sona wrote, taking aim at X. Dear Rahul Gandhi, it’s true that someone has insulted your sister, Priyanka Gandhi, and mother, Sonia Gandhi, in the past, but you should be aware of this. Aishwarya Rai dances exquisitely as well.

Numerous celebrities attended the spectacular opening event of the Ram Temple, which Prime Minister Modi presided over. There was no farmer in sight. There was not a single little store or laborer in sight. However, Rahul Gandhi said, “all the billionaires were visible, and they were making lengthy speeches to the media.”
